For years, speech-to-text engines treated all dictation exactly the same. Whether you were dictating a grocery list, a quarterly financial report, or a high-fantasy battle scene, the software applied the exact same rules.
The result? Standard dictation software is adequate for emails but utterly fails when it comes to creative writing.
At Writrflow, we recognized that context is everything. That is why we built two distinct processing engines: Fiction Mode and General Mode. Here is why splitting them apart is the secret to perfect voice-to-text.
The Problem with "One Size Fits All"
Imagine you are dictating the climax of your sci-fi novel. You say:
Did you secure the perimeter he yelled as the plasma bolt hit the hull
A standard dictation engine will output exactly that string of words, unformatted, looking like a run-on sentence. Or, if you try to use "smart punctuation," it might output:
Did you secure the perimeter? He yelled as the plasma bolt hit the hull.
It misses the dialogue entirely. To get standard dictation to work for fiction, the author has to become a human formatting machine, saying: "Quote, capital D did you secure the perimeter, question mark, end quote, he yelled as the plasma bolt hit the hull, period."
This destroys creative flow.
Enter Fiction Mode
Fiction Mode is trained specifically on the structure, rhythm, and styling of narrative prose. It doesn't just listen to the words; it analyzes the syntax to understand when a character is speaking versus when the narrator is describing.
When you speak the exact same phrase into Fiction Mode, the AI recognizes the dialogue tag ("he yelled") and the action beat. It outputs:
"Did you secure the perimeter?" he yelled as the plasma bolt hit the hull.
Features unique to Fiction Mode:
- Dialogue Auto-Formatting: Inserts quotation marks around spoken dialogue automatically.
- Character Name Recognition: Prioritizes names found in your Custom Glossary (so "Aerin" doesn't become "Aaron").
- Narrative Pacing: Understands longer, flowing, descriptive sentences without incorrectly chopping them up with periods.
The Role of General Mode
So why not use Fiction Mode for everything? Because sometimes you are just writing an email, and you don't want the AI looking for dialogue tags where none exist.
General Mode is optimized for professional communication, note-taking, and outlining. It is snappy, highly literal, and excellent at structuring information.
If you dictate a list of ideas to your team, General Mode knows to keep the sentences concise, apply standard business grammar, and utilize formal capitalization.
Features unique to General Mode:
- Clarity Cleanup: Slightly more aggressive at smoothing out grammar for professional contexts.
- Direct Punctuation: Highly responsive to standard dictation commands if you choose to use them (e.g., "New paragraph").
- Speed: Optimized for ultra-low latency when shooting off quick Slack messages or Notion updates.
The Global Hotkey Advantage
The true power of Writrflow is that you can switch between these modes instantly.
Working in Scrivener on your novel? Leave it in Fiction Mode. Need to quickly reply to an email in Outlook? Toggle to General Mode, hit your global hotkey, and speak your reply.
By separating the engines, Writrflow ensures that your voice always lands on the page exactly as you intended—no matter what you are writing.
